Friday. 2nd [March 1906]. We drove out with Barbara at 8 a.m. to the Karagalla gardens wh is the Govt Botanical Gardens. We saw there many beautiful flowering trees & shrubs & many orchids in flower- It is the best kept & arranged garden we have been in the E. The curator was absent (Mr Knock) but a native foreman showed us round & promised me some cuttings to take home to Venice. We got back to Grimsthorpe at 11.30 & found B`s niece a Miss Julia Layard (Sir Charles` sister) waiting to breakfast with us. She is a nice old lady-& apparently at the same age as her aunt who is 71-She returned to her home soon after lunch. Dr & Mrs Travers came to tea & took Nela out for a walk afterwards. Barbara went out in her rickshaw & I accompanied her on foot. In the evening B. played games of patience while I looked on.
